This post concerns enrolling in the Extended Security Updates (ESU) program for Windows 10 especially if you prefer to use a Local Account.
Up until 10-Oct-2025 it was possible to use the script at https://github.com/abbodi1406/ConsumerESU to enrol without a Microsoft Account, but the developer has confirmed that this no longer works as Microsoft have closed the loophole that allowed it to do that.
However, it is possible to enrol in ESU without permanently switching to using a Microsoft Account. Unfortunately it does mean briefly logging into one.
What you need to do is:
- Start the Enrol process and you will be prompted to log into a Microsoft Account (either an existing one or else create a new one) and you will need to do so.
- You get enrolled for free (if you are in the EEA / UK). Or, if you already used that account to enrol a different device, you get to add this device to it.
- If you want to return to your Local Account, you then need to go to Settings -> Accounts, and under Your Info click “Stop Signing into all Microsoft Accounts automatically”, which will then return you to your Local Account. However, your profile picture will have been overwritten by the one on your Microsoft Account (if you set one, or a blank one if you did not) and you will have to manually set it back to what it was, if different.
It may also be worth going to Sign-in options and turn off “Use my sign-in info to automatically finish setting up my device after an update or restart”
