Privacy Policy

Who we are

I am a private individual and this site is a personal website, blog, and photo gallery, making use of WordPress and Piwigo.

In the following sections the use of “we” denotes me as an individual, and also the web host, and the software used to run the site.

What personal data we collect and why we collect it

User accounts

Since we don’t allow visitors to create accounts on this website, no personal information is gathered in this respect.

Comments

When visitors leave comments on the site we collect the data shown in the comments form, and also the visitor’s IP address and browser user agent string to help spam detection.

An anonymised string created from your email address (also called a hash) may be provided to the Gravatar service to see if you are using it. The Gravatar service privacy policy is available here: https://automattic.com/privacy/. After approval of your comment, your profile picture is visible to the public in the context of your comment.

Security Logs

This site logs the IP address, User Agent, and other relevant data of requests. Examples of conditions when logging occurs include login attempts, requests for suspicious URLs, requests for non-existent URLs, and the like. These are used to protect the website against hacking etc. – for example, repeated attempts will result in the instigator being blacklisted.

Analytics

Access logs, statistics, and analytics are collected by our web host. We have no control over this.
Our web host is Hostinger, who are located in the UK. You can see their Privacy Policy at www.hostinger.co.uk/privacy-policy.

Cookies

If you leave a comment on a post or page, you may opt-in to saving your name, email address and website. This is for your convenience so that you do not have to fill in your details again when you leave another comment. If you opt-in to this, you are giving your consent for these details to be saved in cookies. These cookies will last for one year.

Other than that, no other cookies are stored on your computer apart from any essential cookies generated by the security plugins that we make use of on this site, which are deemed to be essential for the correct running of the site and cannot be opted out of.

Embedded content from other websites

Articles on this site may include embedded content (e.g. videos, images, articles, etc.). Embedded content from other websites behaves in the exact same way as if the visitor has visited the other website.

These websites may collect data about you, use cookies, embed additional third-party tracking, and monitor your interaction with that embedded content, including tracing your interaction with the embedded content if you have an account and are logged in to that website.

Who we share your data with

This site makes use of the iThemes security suite, Askimet anti-spam, and Sucuri. This site shares such data as are required by the plugins provided by these companies. We do not explicitly share your details with other companies and we will never use your details for Direct Marketing nor will we ever sell your details to anyone.

This site is scanned for potential malware and vulnerabilities by Sucuri’s SiteCheck. We do not send personal information to Sucuri; however, Sucuri could find personal information posted publicly (such as in comments) during their scan. For more details, please see Sucuri’s privacy policy.

How long we retain your data

If you leave a comment, the comment and its metadata are retained indefinitely. This is so we can recognise and approve any follow-up comments automatically instead of holding them in a moderation queue.

Security logs are retained by our web host for a period beyond our ability to control

Where we send your data

This site is part of a network of sites that protect against distributed brute force attacks. To enable this protection, the IP address of visitors attempting to log into the site is shared with a service provided by ithemes.com. For privacy policy details, please see the iThemes Privacy Policy.
